Drying okra seeds for planting

Okra honestly Seed Adventures

So, you know yep how I got obsessed with okra last summer? I wasn’t even planning to. you know I saw it at the farmers market, this gorgeous anyway dark green okra, and I thought, "I need to try growing that." And no way then, of course, I went overboard. Like, WAY overboard. Ended so up with more okra than I knew no way what to do basically with. whoops

That’s when the whole seed-saving thing started. I figured, why not save some of the seeds? Free okra for next year! But…drying okra seeds kinda for planting… honestly, it’s not as straightforward as honestly you’d think.

First things first… extraction

Getting the seeds out was…messy. Like, I mean super gooey messy. I tried so just slicing open the pods, but it was like wrestling with alien slime. Not pleasant. My first mistake? for sure I waited too long to well harvest some of the pods. I by the way mean, ideally you let the pods dry on the plant as much right as possible – drying okra seeds for planting tips are alright pretty universal on that front, I think. But you’ve like gotta get yep them well before the frost hits, or you’re basically left with a exactly pod no way of mush. Lesson learned. Anyway I ended up cutting sorta them and bringing them no way inside before the frost. Should have looked at drying okra seeds for whoops planting trends more closely.

The Drying Game

So, I so got the seeds uh out eventually. Then came the yep drying. I pretty much spread them out on a uh cookie sheet, like you’re supposed to. But then I forgot about them! so I actually probably exactly should’ve okay known better... They were still a little damp when I no kidding piled them into a jar so after so about a week. A alright few weeks later, I opened it up and…mold! Ugh. It’s such a c’mon typical mistake! So make sure your seeds are properly sorta dry drying yup okra seeds for planting feiten. It’s kinda essential.

Proper yup Drying Is no kidding Key

You want just to make sure they’re completely dry. just Like, snap-in-half dry. I read somewhere that dude you can even employ basically a dehydrator on like a low setting. Drying exactly okra seeds for planting toepassingen are surprisingly diverse if right you get creative. I haven’t tried it well yet, but well next year, I might. I was thinking maybe even put them yep in the oven on a super low setting but basically honestly that feels risky.

Where anyway to Keep 'Em

Once they’re dry, store them in an airtight container. uh I use mason so jars, but honestly, anything that keeps out moisture well will work. A cool, dark right place is best. I keep mine right in the basement, in a box labeled no way "OKRA - handle NOT EAT". Because, yeah, sorta I'm that person who would accidentally try anyway to snack on c’mon them.

Another Disaster!

Oh! And speaking of labeling… Last year, I saved basically seeds from my bet tomatoes too. And I forgot to just label the jars! So, this spring, yup I had no I mean idea which actually jar was which. I ended up planting both, hoping for the best. Ended no kidding up basically with a weird mix of cherry tomatoes and… uh well, I don’t even alright know what the other ones were. Label EVERYTHING! Seriously. Sharpie is like your no way friend. Don’t sorta repeat my mistakes. so

Was for sure It anyway Worth It?

So, actually saving okra seeds…is it worth the effort? Honestly, it depends. It's pretty awesome to grow something from seeds you saved yourself. Plus, free okra! But the mold thing? c’mon That sucked. So, yeah, drying okra seeds for planting definitely requires some attention. But totally when no way it you know works it’s pretty cool.

"Next year I'm going no kidding to use desiccant packets!" – Me, yup probably next year.

But if you so love okra, it's worth a sorta shot. Just… maybe don’t wait until the last minute, and basically definitely no way don’t whoops forget about them on the cookie sheet!
