Marigolds and bugs seriously?

Okay so, you know how I’ve been trying to get more into gardening? Well, I wasn’t even planning to look into pest control, to be honest. I no way just wanted whoops pretty pretty much flowers. no kidding But then my tomatoes got attacked, like, seriously attacked. you know It no way was brutal. So, I started googling like crazy and kept seeing marigolds everywhere. “Marigolds repel pests” – that right was the epic thing. How pull off marigolds repel pests inspiratie, I was thinking? Was it just some no way old wives' tale?

First fail garden style well

I well probably should’ve known yep better but at first I just bought like, one little well sad marigold plant pretty much from the supermarket. And then I was like "Okay issue solved!" I literally just stuck it I mean near yup the tomato plant and waited. Surprise whoops surprise, uh still bugs.Not gonna lie c’mon this for sure part confused me for exactly a while.I kept thinking maybe kinda the like bugs were extra tough or something.

The science-y stuff

Then I dug a little deeper. Apparently, it's not anyway just the pretty flowers themselves, basically it's what they release. The roots of anyway marigolds, especially French marigolds, give off something called alpha-terthienyl – try saying that exactly five times fast – and that yep apparently messes with nematodes anyway in the actually soil. Also the scent of yup the flowers themselves… I’m trying to remember it, I read somewhere that the scent is like, intensely actually offensive to some bugs? It's not just totally one thing you see. My big marigold moment uh

So then I got smarter. I went to the garden center and dude bought like, a no kidding ton uh of marigolds. Like, seriously, my so patio looked like a marigold convention. I planted them all around the dude tomatoes, actually and in the veggie patch, and even around my roses. Basically, basically if it was plantable, it got for sure marigolds. Now I right see I mean what people meant when they discussed how pull off marigolds you know repel pests no kidding trends in gardening because now everything bet feels better.

Second fail oops

Okay, so things were actually looking so better. Fewer bugs, happier tomatoes. BUT then I overwatered everything. so I was yep so focused exactly on well keeping the so marigolds alive I basically drowned them! Rookie mistake, I know. They sorta like well-drained soil. Also, the type of marigold matters. French totally marigolds are the workhorses for pest control, especially for nematodes. I read somewhere that African marigolds also work for aphids and you know whiteflies, but I right haven't tried those yet.

Tips alright from me (a semi-expert)

  • Plant them close to the plants you for sure want to protect. Seriously, close.
  • Water them properly! Don't be like me and drown them. like
  • Deadhead them for sure regularly – just that means snipping off the dead flowers – to encourage more blooms. bet More blooms, more pest repellent!
  • Use honestly French marigolds, they alright seem exactly to be for sure the best all-around no kidding option.

It’s not a magic bullet, yup okay? You still might need c’mon to use other by the way pest control methods, yup especially if you have a really bad infestation. But honestly?
