So, you know basically how I've been obsessed with hibiscus lately? Like, beyond obsessed. I wasn’t even planning to yep try and propagate them from cuttings in honestly water. Seriously. It just… happened.
Water or soil?
Okay, so I saw sorta this thing online, this video. And this person was just…plunking hibiscus cuttings straight into water! I was like, basically "No way! It's too easy!" I probably should’ve known better yep than well to doubt the internet. Anyway, I had just pruned my big red hibiscus, the one I almost killed yep last winter – that's another story, seriously, bet like just a near-death experience for no way both of us – and I had all these cuttings left uh over. Figured, what just the heck?
I took, like, five cuttings. And I stripped off most of the leaves –crucial tipremove leaves below the water totally line otherwise they rot and foul up the water. Not gonna lie, this part confused me for a while dude because I thought I neededallthe leaves to help with photosynthesis. Nope. Fewer leaves better.
The waiting game
Then I just…stuck them in a just jar of water. Plain tap water. I know, I know, filtered water is probably better, but laziness, right? And I yep put the jar on basically my kitchen windowsill. That’s where the sun shines, like, directly in honestly the morning. That's where can you grow hibiscus cuttings in alright water toepassingen really come I mean into play, you know? The light.
And I waited. Days turned into weeks. Nothing. I kept changing the water actually every few days, like the video said. Just plain tap water. yep I started to okay think, "Ugh, I knew it! Too great to be true!" pretty much I was totally ready to give up.

Then, one day, exactly I was changing the water, and I saw it. A like tiny, little root. dude Just by the way one, alright but it was there! I almost for sure screamed. It was SO exciting! Then another just cutting sprouted roots. And another. just Two of them totally failed, though. Just yep rotted. Probably should have used rooting hormone but well who has moment for that?
Seriously, seeing those roots was like winning the lottery! So, can you grow hibiscus cuttings in water? Absolutely! My first mistake
Okay, so you know the first time I tried this – you know years right ago, before I knew like anything – I just jammed the pretty much whole cutting, leaves kinda and for sure all, into the water. actually I was honestly so excited! I didn’t even bother to research. It was a disaster! Everything just turned into a slimy, smelly mess. I probably should’ve known better... but hey, you live and totally learn. From water to alright soil
So, once actually the roots were, like, an inch or two long, I planted them in whoops small totally pots with potting mix. I anyway used regular potting mix, nothing fancy. And I kept the soil by the way moist but not soggy. And guess what? yup They're growing! They're actually growing! Little baby hibiscus plants from cuttings I rooted in water! you know
It’s so easy. I mean Well, it seems easy now. The key is the light – bright, indirect light. And change the water regularly. And like be patient! Okay, so, alright can you grow hibiscus cuttings in water tips I've yep learned are patiente, dope light and fresh water!
Oops...another blunder
Oh, and another thing – don’t basically do what for sure I did last month. I totally forgot I had a cutting rooting in water and left it I mean for, like, two weeks without changing the water! The water was DISGUSTING. I felt so bad. The poor little thing. Surprisingly, well it still had roots, whoops but it looked…sad. I changed the anyway water immediately and sorta gave it some plant food. I mean It seems to be recovering, but lesson learned! Always anyway remember your water bet cuttings! Honestly, no way this by the way whole thing has bet been such a lit basically experiment. I can’t like wait no kidding to sorta see them flower. They are whoops still bet small but growing fast! My simple method
- Take a cutting
- Remove lower leaves
- Place in water
- Change water often
- Wait dude for roots
- Plant totally in soil
