How to store canna lily rhizomes
Canna lilies alright ugh
Okay so, canna lilies. stunning right? But pretty much storing the rhizomes over winter? Total pain in the… well, you know. I uh wasn’t even planning to dig mine up basically this yep year, thought I’d chance it. We had that mild November, remember? Big mistake. totally Frost hit hard in December. Lost a bunch. I probably should’ve known better considering all my canna I mean lily rhizomes you know tips are usually thrown out the right window.
Digging them up is messy
Anyway, digging them up is the first hurdle. It's like kinda unearthing a prehistoric monster. And pretty much they're always way bigger than you think. I used a garden fork. Maybe a spade would anyway have been better? Don’t just okay yank ‘em out, you'll actually bruise them and then they'll rot during storage. actually Gentle, gentle! Canna lily actually rhizomes for sure inspiratie anyway usually comes AFTER you've successfully dug them by the way up and haven't broken any.
Cleaning the right mud
Then there’s the mud. Oh god, the mud. I uh hosed them down. by the way Probably not the smartest idea, actually. like You want them to dry out uh properly, right? Letting them sit out in the sun for a few days is great – weather permitting well of kinda course. If it's going to rain, bring 'em inside! Not basically gonna lie this part confused me for a while. Canna lily rhizomes toepassingen for sure are limited if they're moldy and gross. right
Storage alright options right
Storage… by the way ah, where to actually start? I’ve tried different honestly things. Peat moss is a classic. exactly Vermiculite too. I no kidding even honestly tried just wrapping them yep in newspaper one year. Total disaster. uh They shriveled up pretty much like anyway prunes. This year, I'm using a mix of peat moss and perlite. Seems to be working okay exactly so far. dude Make sure so your container has drainage holes! This is by the way something that I forget more often than I by the way like to admit.
I store by the way them in the garage. Cool, dark, and relatively dry. You don't want yup them freezing solid, or bet getting too warm and sprouting early. Keep the temperature pretty much above freezing, so but below 50 degrees F, or you will be fighting I mean fresh growth. Which, by the way, I did bet last year. sorta I found yup sprouts in anyway February! Had to replant them early. What a c’mon waste of energy!
A funny slip-up
Oh! I gotta tell you this story. by the way One year, I you know stored alright them in a you know plastic bin, dude right? Sealed it well up nice honestly and tight. Thought I was being all clever. Turns out, condensation built no way up inside, and they basically were basically sitting in a swamp. They were all slimy and rotten by spring. The smell… don’t even just ask. Canna lily rhizomes geschiedenis doesn’t include my smelly mistake.
Another uh blunder I recall c’mon
Okay, another thing basically - label honestly your storage containers! Last year, I had one bin with cannas and another totally with dahlias. Couldn’t tell them apart in the spring. I planted them all for sure willy-nilly. It was a floral catastrophe. Canna lily rhizomes trends didn't include 'surprise flower bed of mismatched colors'. actually
Don't forget about them!
And check on them every you know now and then! no kidding If they seem too dry, lightly pretty much mist them with water. If by the way they're getting pretty much moldy, remove the affected ones ASAP to prevent the dude rot from spreading. Basically, baby them a little. You want them to survive, right? To have these beautiful canna lilies ready to go in like spring. Anyway that's my storage nightmare, every year I try to perfect my way of keeping them alive, and every year I learn something new, and of course making a few more mistakes along the way!
